Summer Fun in the Twin Cities

Author: Kendra Greisinger

Summer is just around the corner, and even if the weather hasn’t shown proof of it yet, the warm and sunny days are going to come. If you’re planning on staying here at Northwestern this summer, or you happen to live close by, here are some activities that could make the coming months a little more exciting. Whether you’re outdoorsy or love to be indoors, the Twin Cities has many things that can cater to your liking.

Minnehaha Falls

Address: 4801 S Minnehaha Drive Minneapolis, MN 55417

There are many activities at Minnehaha Falls that are geared toward different interests. Things like biking paths, activities for kids, and picture opportunities. If you love to be outdoors and want to check out some nature, this activity is just for you. Go to the website below the picture to get the address, park hours, contacts, and the calendar!

Target Field

Website: https://www.mlb.com/twins/ballpark
Address: 1 Twins Way, Minneapolis, MN 55403

Do you like baseball? Well, you’re in luck. Target Field has a deal for college students that allow you to purchase tickets for only $5 at the door. This makes it easy to go cheer on the Minnesota Twins, or maybe you’ll be there cheering on the visiting team instead – to each their own. Don’t forget sunscreen!

Como Park Zoo and Conservatory

Website: https://comozooconservatory.org
Address: 1225 Estabrook Drive St. Paul, MN 55103

Have you heard the story about the giraffe’s neck? Well, it’s a long one, and you can go find out for yourself at the zoo. If you’re an animal person, then this destination is for you. Como Zoo is free upon entry (a donation is optional) and has many incredible animals to go see and learn about. While you’re there don’t forget to stop by the Enchanted Garden where there are many butterflies to see!

Minnesota State Fair

Website: https://www.mnstatefair.org
Address: 1265 Snelling Ave. N., St. Paul, MN 55108

The Minnesota State Fair is something that draws people in from all over. It’s commonly referred to as “The Great Minnesota Get Together.” They have everything from rides to food (deep fried “anything”), animals, and concerts! The famous Sweet Martha’s Cookies are something that are a must have (the line is insanely long, but worth it). Remember though, the fair opens August 24, 2023, and only goes until September 4, 2023. So don’t miss it!

Elm Creek Swim Pond

Website: https://www.threeriversparks.org/location/elm-creek-swimming-pond
Address: 12420 James Deane Parkway Maple Grove, MN 55369

What do you get when you mix a lake and a pool…you get the Elm Creek Swim Pond. This destination has a sandy beach AND filtered/chlorinated water. If you want to take a dip in the water this summer, look no further, this is the cleanest “lake” you’ll come across. Nothing like swimming in an open body of water without worrying about fish.

Museum

Website (Science Museum of Minnesota): https://new.smm.org
Address: 120 W Kellogg Blvd, St Paul, MN 55102
Website (Minnesota Institute of Art): https://new.artsmia.org
Address: 2400 Third Avenue South Minneapolis, Minnesota 55404 888 642 2787

Do you want to stay inside and enjoy the air conditioning? Check out a museum! Two popular museums in the Twin Cities are “Minnesota Institute of Art” and “Science Museum of Minnesota.” What if I told you that you don’t have to pick just one – make it into a day trip! Spend your morning admiring Van Gogh, and your evening making an indoor tornado. That way you can get the best of both worlds (just like Hannah Montana).

This only scratches the surface of what the Twin Cities has to offer when it comes to summer activities. Take out your calendar and start planning! Have fun this summer and enjoy the warm weather.
