Although many people think that PR stands for Puerto Rico, it actually stands for Public Relations. We here at the Mel want to share with you what PR actually means. Basically, it means relating with the public. Who doesn’t do that at some point or another? The actual definition of PR involves creating mutually beneficial relationships with publics.
And here are five reasons why YOU should consider becoming a PR major.
1. PR is used everywhere
It crosses into many different areas no matter the industry such as entertainment, education, advertising, tourism and more. PR can involve coming up with new and creative ideas that make for an exciting career in the field of your choosing.
2. People with every skill set are needed
There are many different skill sets that are needed for PR making it a good option for many. Writing, presenting, interpersonal communication, technology, and research are all skills that fall under PR. No matter where you work, all these skills will show up at some point and can be developed and improved through experience and practice. Also, being an introvert or an extrovert doesn’t matter, any personality type will work. PR could be for you!
3. A lot of career prospects
Public relations is a growing industry that is needed for every business. According to the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics median pay in 2021 was $62,800 per year, averaging out to $30.19 every hour.
You should be able to find a job in PR! The job outlook predicts an 8% growth rate, which is faster than average. (The average growth rate for other work positions is 5%.) The avenues for finding a successful career in Public Relations are plentiful!
4. Fun opportunities in the department
PR is a part of the communications department where there are so many opportunities in all areas. Radio, film, and communication all need PR people.
