It’s the middle of the quad at the University of Northwestern, and everyone’s schedules are beginning to pick up. It becomes a stressful season, where each day is taken one at a time and life seems to become a stagnant pulse of daily assignments and what feels like three minutes of sleep. And when we finally have time for friends, it is difficult to be present in the midst of burnout and sleep deprivation. How can we combat this?

Sleep

Did you know that sleep deprivation and alcohol consumption can generate the same amount of cognitive impairment? Additionally, sleep deprivation can cause other out of character indications like a short temper, difficulty in focusing or recollection, mood swings, and much more.

Getting at least 8 hours of sleep can eliminate these symptoms from your daily routine and strengthen your ability to advance your academics.

“If you are well rested, you will experience less daytime sleepiness and fatigue. You may need less caffeine to stay awake during those long lectures. And you will also find you are more productive, more attentive to detail, and able to concentrate better while studying” – The Division of Continuing Education (DCE), (2024).

Staying Active

Moving your body or getting outside has more health benefits than you might think. While the winter season is still here, there are many things you can do inside to stay active!

  • Have an indoor dance party!
  • Take a pilates, yoga, or cycling class.
  • Indoor workout or cardio

Diversify Your Locations

One reason why you may feel terrible every time you are studying or completing assignments is the atmosphere you place yourself in. Studying in a dull, dimly-lit room can affect your motivation and the mood surrounding your work. Instead, find a place to study that’s pleasing to the eyes. Give your brain natural light, envelop yourself in greenery, declutter the space you are seated in. It’s important to change your atmosphere every now and then so your brain, and your eyes, can be given more life!

Maintain Hobbies

Make sure you have a life outside of your studies! Yes, there is a balance, and yes, there are priorities and responsibilities. But these things should not stray us from maintaining our interests and fads. Here are a few ideas for free!

  • Pick up an instrument! Oncampus, there are multiple piano rooms located in the Knight Performance Hall, or ask your friends to borrow their guitar!
  • Start journaling! Use an old journal and begin documenting memories, create fun lists, and follow writing prompts.
  • Begin reading! Find friends that have books for you. Try out all different genres and find your favorites.
  • Volunteer! This is something you can do alone or with friends. Choose to use your spare time to plug into the community.

Go to Events!

If you are having a difficult time finding ways to see your friends or meet new ones, set aside some time for on-campus events. We have so many student organizations and clubs that hold events all the time! Even if you attend for 30 minutes, it’s a great way to give yourself a break.

These goals may seem far away and hard to achieve, but remember to live in the moment and be present with those in your life. Reach your academic goals within reason, and without giving up your mental and emotional health.
