Every now and then a song comes along that absolutely wrecks you. Profound lyrics mixed with catchy yet dissonant chords declaring the gravity and gladness of God. And that’s how it is with Andy Squyres’ Death Defying Joy. It rolls in like “an unpredictable cloud of clarity” as this week’s top song on the MEL and it seems a very fitting song for Easter week.
The song celebrates the steadfast faithfulness of Jesus beyond the daily struggles we face. In Him we are empty and full. In Him we live with or without miracles. Jesus turned over the tables so that our cups would overflow with mercy and death defying Joy. Sqyures says in an Instagram post that the fickle circumstances of life are never where true hope is found.
I am realizing the goodness of God in my life is not measured by what does or does not happen to me. Prosperity or adversity are neither here nor there.
