Elena Nowlin and Grace Arrigoni, alumni of the University of Northwestern-St. Paul share how the university’s media department equips students for meaningful, successful careers. Drawn to Northwestern for a faith-based education and a close-to-home location, both alumni found a community that challenged, supported, and helped launch them into roles they enjoy.
About: Elena Nowlin, Assistant Director of Digital Marketing and Operations, earned two bachelor’s degrees in Communication Studies and Public Relations at Northwestern. Grace Arrigoni, a Marketing Coordinator in Northwestern’s Marketing Department, earned her bachelor’s degree in Communication with a minor in Marketing.
During their time at Northwestern, both Elena and Grace were deeply impacted by their experiences in the media department. They emphasized how their media professors helped prepare them for their current roles and future goals. Grace recalls a memorable moment with her media professor, Laura Watkins, saying, “When I couldn’t believe in myself, my professor did.” Elena added to her own experiences with professors Wendi Marshall and Mark Segnious, who inspired her with the words, “Your actions in college make an impact in the world.” This advice helped her find meaning in her work, a “launching pad” into her career.
For Elena, serving as a TA for Professor Wendi Marshall formed her. Building a strong connection with Professor Marshall gave her a key advocate and a lifelong mentor whose advice continues to guide her career. Similarly, Grace shares how Professor Laura Watkins gave her the confidence she needed to succeed both academically and personally during her years in the media department.
Both Elena and Grace encourage current and future media students to take advantage of the many opportunities Northwestern offers. They recommend participating in different workshops to help students discover their own passions and develop new skills. Elena advises, “Do workshops outside of your program,” because they build valuable skills and “help you grow.” They also urge students to get to know their professors, as they can be a “super big help,” according to Elena. Grace adds her own advice for students: relax and be confident in your abilities. “It always works out.”
For students considering a career in media, Elena and Grace’s stories show how Northwestern’s media department provides more than just a degree. Through dedicated professors, hands-on experiences, and a supportive, faith-based community, students gain the confidence, skills, and guidance they need to thrive long after graduation.
