As Thanksgiving break comes to a close, many students across the country find it challenging to manage their time, especially as the fall semester winds down. The transition back to classes can feel bittersweet as students reflect on the warmth of home while preparing for the final stretch of the semester. Additionally, with next semester’s courses looming, the thought of transitioning into new classes—often with their own challenges—can add extra stress to an already hectic time.At Northwestern, we want to reach out to students and offer guidance on surviving the hustle to winter break and preparing for a smooth start to the next semester. Fear not, Eagles! With the right preparation and mindset, you can power through this busy season and finish the semester strong.
Here’s what some Northwestern students had to say about their tips and tricks:
Stay Connected, Stay Motivated
Staying organized and keeping track of classes, assignments, and deadlines is essential for managing the college workload. Completing assignments ahead of due dates can ease the pressure and allow you to enjoy quality moments with family over the holidays—stress-free.
One helpful strategy is creating a dedicated workspace for studying. By stepping away from your bed and working in a space designed for focus, you can maintain motivation and productivity.
Be Realistic About Your Time
Often, we as students know what we need to complete but struggle to allocate enough time, leading to rushed homework. Being honest with yourself and scheduling enough time to tackle tasks can make a huge difference.
“I recommend using a calendar and planner to make the most of your time. Also, try the 40-20 method: work for 40 minutes, then take a 20-minute break to avoid burnout.” – UNW student Rebecca Loper shares.
Rebecca also suggests using small rewards to stay motivated and complete assignments on time. Holding yourself accountable can help combat procrastination and ensure you stay on track.
Limit Social Media & Distractions
The holiday season is a time to reconnect with family and friends, but balancing festivities with academic responsibilities can be a challenge. Add in the constant pull of social media, and it becomes even harder to focus.
“Use a planner and bring it to class so you can map out your workload for the week.” – Shared UNW student Isaac Cruver.
Isaac emphasizes the importance of balance. While completing homework is vital, taking time for yourself and stepping out of your dorm room to spend time with friends is just as crucial for your mental health and overall well-being.
Remember, there are plenty of resources on campus to help you manage the stress of this busy season. And always keep in mind, Eagles—we’re all in this together!
No matter how you prepare for winter break, we hope you had a fantastic fall semester and look forward to celebrating your successes in the spring semester!
