Buckle up for a theater performance about theater! The University of Northwestern is opening their spring play The Critic in the Patsy Miller Studio on April 24. The show will run through May 3, with performances taking place Thursday though Saturday. Written by Jeffrey Hatcher and directed by Corey Mills, The Critic will leave audience members experiencing a “whirlwind comedy.”
“From comic mastermind Jeffrey Hatcher comes a fresh take on Richard Brinsley Sheridan’s 18th-century romp THE CRITIC, a comedy about bad theatre, worse playwrights…and, worst of all, the critics. The meta-theatrical frenzy builds throughout, from wacky antics and quick changes to an operatic farce as the company jumps from role to role. Experience a madcap night of life in the theatre with this classic behind-the-scenes comedy.” – University of Northwestern Theater
Olivia Lundberg, an actress in The Critic, shares about her insight and experience preparing for the show.
What is The Critic about?
“The Critic is about these two critics who use their occupation to mess with a playwright whom neither of them like. It’s wildly goofy and over-the-top. It takes place in 1788 and there are 10 people in the cast.”
Who’s your character?
“I play three characters: Miss Buxom is a sexy actress who tries to use her seductiveness to get a better role. Tilburina is a character in the play within the play. She is the English general’s daughter who fell in love with the son of the Spanish general when the two countries are at war. Finally, the Green-Robed Actress #2 is a character in the play within the play who represents one of the banks on the River Thames.”
What’s a fun aspect of this show?
“I love the physical comedy and quick-witted jokes.”
Why should people come watch it?
“People should come see it because they will have so much fun laughing throughout. There’s a smoke machine inside a wig. Need I say more?”
