Managing social media is a huge task! Instagram accounts for theMELpr.unw and whereisthemel represent only two of the media platforms for which students in theMEL public relations workshop create content.

This is where senior public relations major, Callie Fries, comes in. In her role as social media manager for The MEL PR’s executive staff, Fries’ job is to promote all the posts from students in the PR workshop. Fortunately, she’s learned that “the only way to eat an elephant is ONE. BITE. AT. A. TIME.” To see how she’s doing with her challenge, follow The MEL accounts to see how well Fries is doing, and be sure to send her some encouragement by liking the posts.

Additionally, Fries serves as events director on the Core team and is often centrally involved at all types of events – all over campus – all different times of the week. She loves sports and is leaning toward a career in sports PR or event planning. Either way, she’s a loyal supporter of Northwestern athletes, GO EAGLES!!

Fries’ time at The MEL has helped her feel prepared for graduation, and the real-world experience she receives at theMEL.media reinforces her confidence. Fries will graduate this spring after plowing through her capstone PR project(!) and Nonprofit PR. Her favorite class has been Public Relations Cases and Campaigns. Says Fries, “We get to have real-time experience putting our classes to work with a real client!” A world of options awaits her after graduation. Be sure to check back for updates under the Alumni News tab.

“If your client wants a turkey, give them a turkey.”

Marshall 2021

Fries has been impacted by the faculty at The MEL. Fries states, “Marshall has definitely made the biggest impact on my life and degree choice. She’s continuously supportive and always challenges us to bring a new look into PR. Marshall always pushes us to go outside our comfort zones and be confident in what we know. It’s been really helpful in getting internships and informational interviews with companies.” Fries says the most valuable lesson she learned as a Public Relations student is, “if your client wants a turkey, give them a turkey!”

But the most important thing to know about Fries is she prefers Marvel Cinematic Universe over DC Comics! She is passionate about The Avengers and especially Captain America. Although, she does admit that DC Comics has better television shows.
