What is so life-changing about being dunked under water by a pastor? This is a question that people may ask when they see Christians practicing baptism in rivers, in pools, or from basins. Baptism is such a short experience, but it is life-changing for many because it signifies new life in Christ. We say goodbye to our old life with all of our old ways, thoughts, and hopes and welcome a new self that will be shaped daily by Christ. Without Christ, baptism would simply be a bunch of people dunking each other in whatever available body of water that they can find. With Christ, baptism changes who we are at the core and gives us an entire new identity!
Marcus Rogers celebrates this change of identity in his song, “Drippin’.” He says,
“I ain’t been the same since I dipped in that water
Went from dark to light like 6 in the morning.”
Marcus Rogers recalls his baptism and how it has changed his life from dark to light. He celebrates the death of his old self and proclaims his new self in Christ in this song. He also declares his safety from satan because he is a son of God:
“I ain’t been the same since I dipped in that water
Devil want my soul may he trip in the Son.”
