The path of life takes many forms. Seldom the path is straight, set on a smooth trail, lined with beautiful foliage and covered by a brilliant sunny sky. The end is in sight; all you have to do is keep walking. However, sometimes the path can take another form. Full of forks, curves, hills, and valleys, darkened by a gloomy sky. This path cannot be navigated without a map, and this map has yet to be attained.
What does your path look like? Recent graduate from University of Northwestern, Shelby Greven ’24, explained her path. Greven received her certificate in Biblical Studies from Free Lutheran Bible College – Plymouth, expressing interest in pursuing a major in chemistry at a four-year college.
A dip appeared in the path; Greven, while passionate about science, ultimately decided against this idea and began a major search. As it is with life, clouds clear and the sun peeks through. Greven hunted for the perfect college and discovered UNW. On her first visit to the campus, she felt “at home.” Thus, her journey further down the path began.
The path started to straighten out when Greven, slightly unresolved about her future, ultimately decided to pursue a B.S. in Communication Studies. The professors she met throughout her time at school contributed to the homey and kind atmosphere. “I felt mentored and loved by my professors,” Greven explained. “You might know Professor Watkins. I still go out to coffee with her sometimes!”
Greven procured an important skill that will help her as she continues her stroll down the footpath: the importance of making connections. While at UNW, she began an internship with AFLC World missions. This connection developed into her current position after graduation. Greven now works for the company as their communications coordinator. Her responsibilities include keeping contact with missionaries, writing newsletters, communicating with the mission’s supporters, and managing the company’s social media.
Greven offered a piece of advice for all of those continuing their walk down the path after graduation: Do not be afraid and remember the foundation you have built. Being surrounded by a like-minded community in college makes keeping a strong faith easy, but faith can be tested. Greven explained that success in the world does not necessary reflect success in the eyes of God.
Your path, regardless of its shape, surroundings, or weather framing the route can be similarly conquered. Forks and bends are bound to happen, but a higher trust in the Lord can ensure you reach your destination in the end.
