I know it’s February, but do you want to try ring by spring?

Naturally, getting married can come after dating, so it’s completely natural to have thought of marriage before arriving at speed dating. However, this question may be a tiny bit too forward. Odds are you have last-minute expertise, but not all last-minute arrangements are equal. Leave your superior cramming skills to those essays you have to write and chapters you need to read. Meet new people, enjoy the evening, and keep engagement in two months out of mind.

Can I meet your parents?

Meeting your significant other’s parents can be awesome once you’re serious, but asking to meet them on the first date is a bad idea. The results may include creating awkwardness, making the other person feel pressured, or giving the impression that you’re a creep. It can also unintentionally push someone away before a genuine connection has had a chance to develop. First dates are meant to get to know each other, not start a family reunion.

How many kids do you want?
As a guy at Northwestern speed dating a question I do not want to be asked is, “how many kids do you want?” This question puts a lot of pressure on the guy because it immediately assumes a lot of things. Guys do not want to be talking about kids within the first five minutes of meeting a girl. So, if you are a girl and are going to speed dating, do not ask your date that question.
How much money do you make?
Another question you don’t want to ask right out of the bat: How much money do you make?
Get to know the person for who they are, not for the numbers in their bank account. We’re all college students who aren’t at our best financial status. You don’t want to risk getting too personal and letting go of a promising date.
This question may not be what you want to lead with in your fresh connection…
While some people love FaceTime, others do not. Your roommates waking up for class in the morning? I don’t think your date wants to hear that. Hook them with a couple more jokes before you scare them away with your chainsaw sounding, room shaking, snoring. “Want to go for a walk?” Might just be a better offer to start off with.

Can I Just Use AI?

Sure, AI could be helpful with conversation starters, but depending on AI during this event can leave both you and your date feeling awkward. Having to whip out your phone to answer “what’s your major” mid-conversation may leave you with a good impression. Nothing kills the vibe faster than spending your whole time together waiting for your response to load. At that point, you’re not speed dating; you’re speed-consulting while your date waits awkwardly.

Do you like my last name?

Fellas, first dates can be a nerve-racking experience. You may think to yourself, “Is that my feet or my armpits?” “Does my hair look okay?” “I have no idea what to say to this girl. I’m so stressed.” Well, stress no more! Here’s one conversational tip for the guys looking for their Valentine’s Day miracle. I can’t fix the first two problems, but I can help you avoid something you should never say on a first date.“Your first name and my last name would look so good together.” If your goal was to secure a spot in her blocked category, congratulations, you’re locked in! But if you’re actually hoping for a second date, maybe leave that line at home. Your odds improve dramatically when you don’t propose marriage before the appetizer arrives. And lastly, if you still can’t tell where that smell is coming from, I suggest investing in deodorant before you tackle a date.
