Surrounding the election, there is so much uncertainty. But one thing is certain: your voice matters more than ever. But here’s the catch—making it count means showing up and showing up early. Early voting and young voter turnout are not just trendy buzzwords; they’re the backbone of shaping our collective future.
Why Early Voting?
Life is busy, and juggling homework, jobs, and social events can make it easy to forget Election Day. Early voting is a game-changer for students. It allows you to cast your ballot on a day that fits your schedule, reducing the risk of unexpected conflicts or last-minute issues. I was able to vote early, the first day it opened! I conducted a survey asking Northwestern students if they voted early. 90% of students asked had already voted early or had plans to.
The Power of Young Voters
Did you know that young people aged 18-29 make up a significant portion of the voting population? Yet historically, this group has one of the lowest turnout rates. That means crucial decisions about the future—policies on education, healthcare, climate change, and job opportunities—are made without your full say. However, when young voters show up in force, they can sway outcomes and push forward changes that align with their values and aspirations. As Senator Heather Gustafson of Lino Lakes highlights, Minnesota was recently ranked #1 in the country for youth voter turnout. Your voice matters!
How You Can Make a Difference
- Check your registration: Ensure you’re registered and know where and how to vote.
- Vote early: Take advantage of early voting to avoid the last-minute rush and wait times.
- Spread the word: Encourage your friends to prioritize voting. A simple conversation can motivate others to take action.
Let’s make this election and every one moving forward a moment where young voices are heard loud and clear. Remember, when you vote early, you’re not just choosing candidates; you’re choosing your future.
