I know people who are really trying to find an appreciation for the book of Psalms and are finding that it can be a really hard book to love. Sometimes I even start to think “Thanks, David, but I just cannot identify with anything you’re saying here.” Despite this there are two chapters in the Psalms that I have fallen in love with and I wanted to share them with you.
I thoroughly enjoy how the 48th and 50th Psalms capture the power of God.
“God is in her citadels; he has shown himself to be her fortress.” (48:3)
“When kings joined forces, when they advanced together, they saw her and were astounded; they fled in terror.” (48:4-5)
“The Mighty One, God, the LORD, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to the place where it sets.” (50:1)
“Our God comes and will not be silent; a fire devours before him, and around him a tempest rages.” (50:3)
“‘Hear, O my people, and I will speak, O Israel, and I will testify against you: I am God, your God.” (50:7)
I could go on with verses from these two chapters that show God’s authority, but perhaps my favorite verses are:
“I have no need of a bull from your stalls or of goats from your pens, for every animal of the forest is mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills. I know every bird in the mountains, and the creatures of the field are mine. If I were hungry I would not tell you, for the world is mine and everything in it.'” (50:9-12)
And then I love how He ends both chapters with this sort of “I am God, I don’t need you, but I will protect you anyways.”
“For this God is our God for ever and ever; He will be our guild even to the end.” (48:14)
“‘He who sacrifices thank offerings honors me, and he prepares the way so that I may show him the salvation of God'” (50:23)
Neither of these chapters are terribly long, and I want to encourage you to read them in full. They provide refreshing words when hope is lost.
