Student Government, a coalition of students who want to make a difference at the school they attend. As representatives of the entire student body, they must put thought into every action. Communication Director, Michael Kysylyczyn, was able to shed some light on the hopes and goals that University of Northwestern Student Government has.
As for the overarching hope of Student Government, Michael stated that this is a big conversation in the government office. Their team values include advocacy, humility, commitment, and belonging. They spent a lot of time deliberating and choosing these and their hope is to use these values to advocate for the student body, foster a sense of belonging, and act with humility to be Christ-centered individuals. They also hope to maintain an open ear and listen so that they can put the student body’s needs above their own.
The goals that Student Government is moving to achieve include “project acts,” headed by Business Director Caleb Andrews. In the past, these projects included the swings around campus, the STUD movie theater, and updated furniture. Another goal for them is making Student Government more approachable as a casual group, they are doing this by posting more social media content.
Finally, the most important aspect that we learned from Student Government was how they have seen God present in their work so far this semester. Michael said that the biggest place they see God is when they have a meeting it has an air of community. Each of the representatives is brought on by the student body, with first-year students receiving a special election. This means that it is completely in God’s hands how each of these people come together and work with one another. They may have differences, but God is able to help them communicate and best serve the student body and through that, God himself.
Student Government has many hopes, goals, and God moments that they have been able to pinpoint. The student body has the privilege of being able to help Student Government bring these hopes into fruition.
